Pilea microphylla
Artillery plant
Fine lime-green fern-like foliage forming a dense mat — a classic terrarium filler that may fire pollen.
Tropical American groundcover with minute leaves on delicate stems. Named for pollen ejected from flowers. Fast enough to fill gaps; watch for mildew if airflow is poor. Often listed as non-toxic to humans and pets. Can become weedy outdoors in warm climates; indoors, prune to contain.
Why it works
Fine texture unlike seeded larger pileas; documented terrarium use and beginner care; fun pollen artillery detail for education.
Watering notes
Allow the top of the mix to dry slightly between waterings in open pots; in closed cases water sparingly.
Care tips
- Bright indirect light; protect from harsh midday sun.
- Keep moist but well drained.
- Trim to maintain a low carpet in small cases.
- Vent sealed cases occasionally to reduce mildew risk.
Common problems
- Root rot from overwatering
- Powdery mildew in high humidity with poor air movement
- Scorch from direct sun
